ZOMG! So Gitmo’s, like, sooooooo beautiful!

March 31, 2009

Misses USA and Universe 2008 (Crystle Stewart and Dayana Mendoza, respectively) have returned from a trip to Guantanamo Bay.  Were they there to draw further attention to the plight of detainees?  No, according to the NY Times, they were there to “to visit troops as part of a U.S.O./Armed Forces Entertainment tour”.

Dayana reports that they had “a wonderful time” and “a loooot of fun!”.  In fact, it was “soooo beautiful”  and such “an incredible experience” that Dayana “bought a necklace … that will remind me off Guantanamo Bay :)”.

I didn’t want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

They didn’t completely ignore the detainees:

We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting.

Dayana doesn’t say whether they remain at Gitmo because they heart it so much they don’t want to leave…

And Miss Universe is from Venezuela?? That’s even weirder. How many Venezuelans are there who approve of the US occupation of Guantanamo Bay?

It is pretty ignorant to visit the military prison at Guantanamo and go “ooooooh, pretty beaches” instead of “oh, serious violations of international law”. I suppose one consolation is that they wouldn’t have invited anyone who was going to criticise them anyway — that would be silly. I’m sure they would have found someone ignorant enough to invite. As for choosing a Venezuelan, perhaps they really wanted to one-up Hugo Chavez?

Since Bush left office, Chavez has been off my radar a bit. Maybe he was planning his own “Bay of Pigs” so the BQs were despatched to act as human shields.

The Hun take on the story is bizarre: http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25269737-663,00.html
